Sun-ju (Shin Eun-Gyeong) is a journalist. She finds out her niece died at the same hour as three of her other friends, all in different places. With her suspicions aroused, she asks for help from Choe Yol (Jeong Jin-Yeong), a neuro-surgeon, who has fallen into disgrace. He performs autopsies on the dead and claims their deaths were supernatural. The only clue is a video full of strange images and sounds. The video concludes with a message saying “You will die in a week. If you want to survive…” Choe Yol finds out that the video was recorded through the powerful ESP of a dead girl who lived a lonely and unhappy life.
Almost three years before Hollywood released their remake of Hideo Nakata’s smash hit Ringu, this South Korean version appeared and became one of the biggest box-office hits of the year. The four-decade ban on Japanese films receiving a general release in South Korea began to be lifted in October 1998, but in the first two years afterwards only six Japanese films were released. This Korean-Japanese co-production (one of the first between the two nations) provided Korean audiences with a readily available version of the biggest success story to come out of the Asian horror scene in half a century.
Director Kim Dong-bin creates a chilling, coldly aesthetic film that integrates supernatural imagery and the equipment of contemporary media. Kim heightens the tension produced by the storyline with a palette of bluish dark colors and an odd, pulsating soundtrack.
